MANUAL HANDLING AWARENESS WORKSHOP
 

Staff Group
Any member of staff who is required to handle objects, materials or equipment within their working day and/or who use a VDU as part of their job.

Aim of the session

To develop staff awareness of the hazardous nature of manual handling and to reduce the risk of injury when handling objects, materials and equipment.

Objectives of the session

To have an awareness of the potentially hazardous nature of manual handling.

To interpret the key requirements of the Manual Handling Operations Regulations.

To describe the basic structure and function of the spine and its vulnerability to injury.

To have an awareness of the role of risk assessment in identifying and reducing the risk of injury.

To apply the principles underlying low risk manual handling technique.

To have an awareness of how to set up VDU workstations.

Course Content

The scale of the problem with back injury in the workplace.

The legal requirements of employers and employees relating to Manual Handling in the workplace.

The vulnerability of the Spine to injury and posture correction.

Personal and Occupational risk factors.

Reducing Risk – some useful tools.

The importance of Manual Handling Risk Assessment – a brief guide.

Demonstration and Practice of Low Risk Manual Handling Technique.

Setting up a VDU workstation to reduce risk of ULD’s and improve posture.
