MANUAL HANDLING COMPREHENSIVE WITH SERVICE USER HANDLING – Residential and Community Settings
 

Staff Group
Newly employed care staff who are involved in any aspect of manual handling including service user handling within a residential or community setting.

Aim of the session

To gain appropriate manual handling knowledge and skills to be able to operate safely.

Objectives of the session

To demonstrate an awareness of the potentially hazardous nature of manual handling and the vulnerability of the spine to injury.

To interpret the requirements of the Manual Handling Operations regulations 1992.

To demonstrate an awareness of the role and process of assessment in identifying and reducing the risk of manual handling injuries.

To apply the principles underlying low risk manual handling technique.

To describe manual handling practices or techniques that have been condemned as unsafe for staff and/or service users.

To demonstrate use of a range of low risk manual handling techniques and small handling equipment whilst considering normal human movement.

To describe how to safely use hoists as appropriate to their workplace.

To describe how to safely use wheelchairs as appropriate to their workplace.

To describe how to set up a workstation using an ergonomic approach.

Course Content - Day One

The scale of the problem with back injury in the workplace.

The legal requirements of employers and employees relating to Manual Handling in the workplace.

The vulnerability of the Spine to injury and posture correction.

Personal and Occupational risk factors.

Reducing Risk – some useful tools.

Demonstration and practice of low risk manual handling technique (inanimate objects)

An introduction to manual handling risk assessment – an ergonomic approach.

Setting up a VDU workstation to reduce risk of ULD’s and improve posture.

Course Content - Day Two

Assessing client handling needs.

Condemned techniques.

Understanding normal human movement.

Practice of service user handling techniques. (This includes taking the role of the service user to enable an empathetic approach.).

Demonstration by trainer of safe use of hoists. (where available).

Demonstration by trainer of safe use of wheelchairs.

Case Study – re visiting Risk Assessment.

Review session with questions and answers.
